I'm not a big fan of small cars but I get that they're useful to some. In a big city like New York, San Francisco or Chicago a car like the Honda Fit might be perfect. But not all subcompacts are created equal. The 2010 Honda Fit does an excellent job of maximizing cargo space and it can be fun to drive. Double true for the 2011 Ford Fiesta which adds compelling tech features and sharp handling.
I would expect the same from the 2010 Toyota Yaris - it's not that Toyota's are super-exciting to begin with but they do typically offer a smooth ride and quiet, thrifty engines. Not so with the Yaris, the ride is busy, there's lots of road and engine noise and the interior materials are just plain ugly. The Ford Fiesta, Nissan Versa and even the Hyundai Accent are all better.
I'm not a huge fan of most Toyota cars but they do seem to build cars that last plus a soft, compliant ride goes a long way to winning repeat business - then again, Honda and Ford hit almost all the same marks so I just don't see the point of the Yaris. It's one of the few moderns cars that just aren't worth considering.
