2011 Hyundai Sonata Limited Review

The problem with reviewing any new car is that pretty much every automaker has it right in one way or another. That's great for consumers but makes reviewing cars hard because it too often seems like we're just full of endless and meaningless praise. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata doesn't help - it's a good sedan that's easily as good as competitors like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. But there are a few things that set the Sonata apart.

The styling is the first thing that sets the Sonata head and shoulders above the rest. Inside, it has a clean and sophisticated look - the burgundy colored leather seats in the Limited are far beyond what anyone would expect from a $25,000 car. The exterior look is also elegant and looks more like a $40,000 Lexus rather than a Hyundai that starts at $19,000.

Under the hood is a 2.4 liter, direct injection four cynlinder engine. Even the upscale Limited gets a four - no more V6 for the Sonata. Expect this trend to continue with other cars. The Sonata still has plenty of power though, 198 hp to be exact. Yet it manages 35 mpg on the highway and 22 in the city. Accleration is remarkably brisk and most owners will wonder why they ever wanted a V6 in the first place (but surely they will want one even if they don't know why).
The Sonata delivers crisp handling to the point the car almost feels like a sport sedan. A few passengers complained that the highway ride was too busy or firm. From the driver's seat it feels just about right.

Tons of interior comfort and convenience features help make the journey much more entertaining - a 400 watt Infinity audio system, XM radio and iPod connection are all included on the Limited, in fact the iPod/USB port is standard on all Sonatas.

It's easy to dismiss the 2011 Hyundai Sonata as just another good sedan in a sea of Accords and Camrys but this newest Hyundai has enough style to look and feel just a little different. A low base price and high fuel economy should seal the deal for most import shoppers. Conservative Camry owners might not like the Sonata's sleek look but anyone considering a Ford Fusion, Honda Accord or Chevy Malibu would be wise to give the 2011 Sonata a serious look when it comes time to sign on the bottom line.

By the way, look for a hybrid Hyundai Sonata very soon.
