10 Great Fuel Sippers - High MPG Without Compromise

2010 Mazda5 Grand Touring - 28 mpg highway.

Getting a fuel efficient car is more of a duty than a real desire for most people but here's 10 cars that sip fuel and don't beat you up in the process.

1) 2010 Toyota Prius: Like it or not, the Prius is flat out the high mileage champ. A staggering 51 mpg city / 48 highway means the combined fuel economy is 50 miles per gallon. Conservative drivers should be able to top that number.

2) 2011 Ford Fiesta: A 1.6 liter engine keeps this small Ford at about 40 mpg highway. Compelling electronics like next generation Sync and the new AppLink make the Fiesta perfect for the loft-living crowd. Excellent handling and a $14,000 base price add to the car's appeal.

3) 2010 Chevrolet Equinox: SUVs don't typically leap to mind when thinking of good fuel economy but Chevy has managed to make the 2.4 liter, four cylinder engine both powerful and efficient. 32 mpg highway in the Equinox tops both Honda and Toyota's small SUVs.

4) 2010 Kia Forte: Opt for the EX version of the Forte and add the Fuel Economy Package and you'll get 36 mpg highway. That's one mile per gallon better than the thriftiest version of the Honda Fit.

5) 2010 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI: Fun to drive, slick looking and 30 mpg city / 42 highway make the Jetta a great alternative to hybrids. VW's TDI Golf and Audi's diesel powered A3 do just as well.

6) 2010 Mini Cooper: Cute? Yes. Fun? Yes. Fuel sipping and affordable? Yes and Yes - the base Mini Cooper with six-speed manual transmission gets 28 mpg city / 37 highway. One slight bummer - the Mini takes premium fuel so you may not save as much money as the Kia owner.

7) 2010 Chevrolet Traverse: This crossover SUV is about as big as a Tahoe but racks up an impressive 24 mpg on the highway topping even GM's own Tahoe Hybrid.

8) 2010 Jeep Compass: Granted, the Compass isn't greatest car in the world but it does beat every other 4-wheel drive SUV when it comes to sipping fuel. EPA rating for a manual transmission Jeep Compass is 23 city / 28 highway.

9) 2010 Mazda5: With a 153-horsepower, four cylindner engine the Mazda5 achieves 22-mpg in the city and 28-mpg on the highway. Plus, it's a six passenger miniature minivan. It's fun to drive, looks different and has a roomy interior. One drawback (for some), the sliding side doors are not power but they do open and close remarkably easy.

10) 2010 Hyundai Elantra Blue: It's a basic model for sure but the low purchase price plus 35 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg combined means it's a must drive for anyone on a budget.
