Pulse All-Electric Car
All electric cars are just around the corner. This is the Pulse Electric car developed by ACG in Chino, California. This car was recently shown at SEMA and is able to achieve highway speeds. Based on a gasoline powered sub-compact sold in China, the Pulse is small by US standards but no more so than, say a Honda Fit. I was in the car as it hit 70 mph. On the open road, the Pulse feels like a compact but is eerily quiet. Nissan is set to launch the all-electric Leaf by the end of 2010 but the Pulse won't be ready quite that soon. The problem is, the small Sothern California company (which also builds Neighborhood Electric Vehicles) just doesn't have the nearly $4 Million needed to crash test the car and develop an airbag system.
Neighborhood Electrics built by ACG can be ordered to look like mini versions of the Hummer H2, Cadillac Escalade or a '39 roadster, a car the company designed in house. It's tempting to call these NEVs golf carts but they're much more than that. Options include 16 inch chrome wheels, audio and/or video system, leather seating, roof, enclosure canopy and others. Load one up and you could spend close to $20,000. Of course they can be driven on the street provided the posted speed limit is 35mph or lower, they cannot be driven on the highway. Check out all the options and models at the company's web site - Brian Moody
